About OpenVPX
OpenVPX™ Industry Working Group
An independent association addressing VPX system interoperability issues
Cross Industry Collaboration
Mercury Computer Systems has initiated the formation of the OpenVPX Industry Working Group, an independent association comprised of both leading defense industry prime contractors and COTS systems developers. This working group will focus on solving the VPX interoperability issue, from an open system architectural level, to provide clear guidance for development of solutions with interoperability as a requirement.
OpenVPX Goal
The primary goal of the Working Group will be to develop a comprehensive OpenVPX System Design Guide, covering VPX systems for both 3U and 6U form factors. A great portion of this Design Guide will consist of defining VPX Profiles, sets of specifications and practices, which, when followed, shall result in truly interoperable system components.
When the OpenVPX System Design Guide is complete, it will be transitioned to the control of the VITA standards organization.
Based on Open Architecture Principles
The working group will follow Open Architecture principles, so that the OpenVPX standard will be:
- Open to augmentation and innovation with other standard technologies
- Open to efficient systems integration with minimal interoperability risk
- Open to substitution of improved solutions over time
The working group will also ensure that hardware, software architecture, and interface specifications are fully defined, available to the public, and maintained according to a consensus process.

The Next Level of VPX Standards
For years, VPX has provided the defense and aerospace industry with access to best-in-class technologies at the board level, ensuring a long technology life cycle. Now, customers want system-level standards to improve interoperability and reduce customization, testing, cost, and risk.
