Smart Weapons
Smart weapons technology involves embedding high-performance computing inside traditional weapons such as missiles, bombs, and torpedoes. These weapons are equipped with one or more sensors (RF, EO/IR, LADAR). The computing unit embedded in the weapon processes the sensor input for targeting and control. Today, standard form-factor, conduction-cooled VME boards are used in torpedoes, but the special form-factor boards needed in missiles and bombs are built in-house by defense contractors. Mercury supports these contractors by combining various processor types, such as FPGAs and RISC processors, into a cohesive multiprocessor system, and then packaging that system for rugged, conduction-cooled, customized enclosures.
